If you’re concerned about this coming from Meta, you haven’t been paying attention. This is not to excuse Metas responsibility in the enshittification of the internet, but as a hyperscalar they of course have been pushing computing technology for a long time, and many of it openly available. CRAM will probably be upstreamed into Linux and I assume is therefore already licensed under the GPL. Meta Research seems to be operating in a much more open and useful way than the rest of the company.
It’s foolish to fall for the false firewall these corporations try to put up between divisions. Meta is meta is meta. Do not think for a moment that they are not the same thing.
It seems like there are even idealistic employees of these places that have deluded themselves into believing that, simply because right at this moment, the person Meta has put in charge of their division isn’t an absolute psychopath, that their positions aren’t extremely unethical.
Did you know that most of the contributions made to the Linux kernel come from people who are being paid to do so?
Corporate developers authored 84.3% of kernel commits in 2025, with contributions distributed across more than 1,780 organizations. Intel maintained its position as the top contributor by changesets, delivering nearly double the volume of second-place Google.
Google demonstrated extensive sign-off activity, accounting for approximately 12.5% of patches. Meta functions as a significant maintainer hub, with 12.5% of patches passing through Meta-affiliated reviewers.
Yes, meta is a evil ass company but the fearmongering, that they will take over Linux is just that. Fearmongering. The Linux foundation has been put in charge of the kernel to prevent takeover of the project by corporate members and it has been like that for years.
