10-23-26 Kenya - Building under construction between 10 and 18 stories collapses.
It occurred in a busy commercial and residential area on Yusuf Haji Avenue in the Eastleigh neighborhood, Nairobi, Kenya.
The ground floor and basement housed businesses (an electronics shop, a butcher shop and a grocery store) that were operating even though the upper structure was still under construction and lacked an occupancy certificate.
The Kenya Red Cross, police and army teams are working at the site, facing difficulties due to the initial shortage of heavy machinery and looting attempts in nearby shops that police dispersed with tear gas.
It is feared that dozens of people are trapped (workers and pedestrians), although authorities have not confirmed official figures for dead or injured, with one woman rescued alive and phones going silent for people with whom contact was lost.
The exact official cause is still under investigation, but authorities and experts point to serious structural failures and lack of professional supervision.
