“They’re showing their support and telling me what I did was good and shedding a good light on East Africans and Muslims in general. It’s a little overwhelming. Everybody is contacting me, but it’s also rewarding,” Ahmed said.
I’d love for religion and religious culture to never have a headline again. If it takes some invisible god, or your ancestors, or your preacher to tell you to do the right thing, then you aren’t a good person. Your morals shouldn’t be qualified by external sources.
As long as they are used to headline bad news, we should strive to do the same for good ones. Discussing the ideal of none having these details just makes it so that the bad news remain only ones to do that. That’s actively worse.
Dropping mentions of sky fairies on good news but leaving them on bad ones, specifically for the “other” sky fairies than your “own” ones, is better than at least being fair and mentioning the fairies everywhere?
Dropping mentions of the fairies, especially the competing “other” fairies in bad light, is not going to happen and we all know it. What might be realistic is not limiting the fairies to a weapon of discrimination and alienating the “others” (non-white people), but equally bringing them up on good news too.
I mean the ideal case would be no mentions of fairies if it’s not strictly relevant, anywhere.
Right now though, that’s not going to happen, and if we don’t fix the current disbalance and inequality, then we are left with an actively harmful, discriminating situation.
If we can make things slightly better, even if not perfect, it’s still better than not doing even the slightly better because it’s not perfect.
Although I guess it’s fair to question my assumption that it’d be more realistic to increase the mentions of other fairies and especially on good news too, than to drop every fairy, especially the Christian white flavored one, from everywhere. I might be wrong in that, but I feel rather strongly I’m not.
Well, sky fairies are never relevant, which is why it upsets me everytime someone mentions one whether its “good” news or “bad”. I dont agree that there is a benefit to having positive stories about sky fairies to counterbalance the negative ones. You are right that we are very far from abolishing religion though, but that doesnt make it less upsetting to see or hear. Similar to how it might be upsetting to see any other rampant problem that seems unfixable.
The absurdity of it all is pretty easy to see, yet it happens constantly. Story after story of a tragedy happening to a person, who then survives and thanks their sky fairy for rescuing them despite the sky fairy also causing the original tragedy. Its nonsense, and its disappointing and its extremely common.
Not sure what you mean here? The article clearly states his religion and there are even quotes from him about it…
When it’s negative the headline says “Muslim Man” when positive the headline says “Minnesota Man”

Would love to see that as a headline one day!

Having a majority of people on this planet believe in sky fairies is actively worse.

I too am sick of religion. Its like as soon as I think someone might be reasonable, they mention god and it all goes down the drain.
