Someone already did the math on this and it was “only” a few days of energy if I remember correctly.

If only there was some way to harness that energy.

    Same issue with lighting bolts

Yeah, similar reason why you can touch teslacoils even though they can be pushing 20k volts and you’ll be fine (if a bit jolted) while touching the 120V live house wire can instantly kill you.

Lightning is static electricity, though with reserves much larger than a teslacoil (hence why they can sometimes kill, because there is some amperage to them, just not a sustained amperage), while our power grid is powered by generators and systems that do their best to keep that voltage constant, no matter what is trying to draw from it.

And to put it into perspective, a brief moment of exposure to that energy will kill, but your toaster still needs a few minutes worth to crisp up some bread.

I don’t remember the sequence. I presume this was after having pushed the emergency stop button?

Pfft, if you believe the official reports.

According to my fanfic, the commandant begged them not to do the test: “look at the butterflies, have we not enough energy on mother earth?”

“That’s enough!” he cried, as they cranked the power ever higher, but the evil workers held him down and made him watch as it grew steadily unstable.

“Fear not, dear friends, for we can use our true and faithful kill switch” he offered, but the workers snickered, as that hope too was lost.

As the others fled the vicinity, he threw himself onto the reactor and screamed “Noooooo! Take me!”
