Hello! When running any video game in Lutris (LMDE 7) it crashes. It doesn’t matter if they’re Windows (run via Wine) or ProtonDB based. It worked almost flawlessly some days before it suddenly stopped working. Maybe I did some configuration that broke it all. When using Steam, it runs flawlessly. It’s only Lutris and even Heroic.
The log when opening Metro 2033 Redux as reference:
Started initial process 19668 from gamescope -w 2560 -h 1440 -W 2560 -H 1440 -f – gamemoderun (…)/lutris/runners/wine/lutris-7.2-2-x86_64/bin/wine (…)/drive_c/GOG Games/Metro 2033 Redux/metro.exe Start monitoring process. I have had no clue of how to solve this for at least one week.
For context: I’m a total beginner in Linux. Came from windows 10 just like 2 months ago. No background in programing or anything related.
If I’m missing any info of value let me know. Thanks!
EDIT:
Here’s the process I followed to solve it:
-
Disabled Gamescope. It made all games work except one that was installed via Bottles and linked to Lutris later. I have to fix gamescope.
-
Ran this script by u/dgdft and solved the gamescope issue:
echo 'options nvidia-drm modeset=1' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-drm-modeset.conf
sudo update-initramfs -u
sudo reboot
-
Tried installing another windows based game. It worked. The problem wasn’t Lutris or even windows games, just that one single game.
-
Added the game that was giving me trouble in Steam as a non steam game. To do that you make the new blank non steam game target the .exe of the game you want it to run. Then link the savefiles (located in “<Steam-folder>/steamapps/compatdata/{game’s app ID}/pfx”) and the game was working flawless.
-
Came back to Lutris and “Add locally installed game”: [Game info] Runner: Wine (bc I want to run a Windows game) [Game options] Executable: The same .exe as the steam game [Game options] Working directory: Same as steam game [Runner options] Wine version: Same as steam game (Proton Experimental)
-
Looked at the differences between the original Lutris game runner and the new I created and tested each one. Realised it was just the runner; I thought I tried each one I had available: totally wrong haha.
Extra non-related tip: Metro 2033 Redux made my GPU and fans go nuts. Enabled Vsync and solved it.
Summary: Turning on kernel mode setting (KMS) for NVIDIA’s DRM driver for the gamescope issue and using a different wine version (Proton Experimental in my case)
Thank you everybody and specially u/dgdft, u/LeighWeighTacoma, u/exupulosion@sh.itjust.works, u/yaroto98 for giving me the tips that helped me the most solve it.
I’m just jumping in here to say welcome to Linux mint and I hope these people get things sorted for you.
Thanks mate! Very glad I finally did the jump into the Linux world 🫡
This usually happens when you update your system but not flatpak. Update flatpak and it should be fine.
I did that. Doesn’t solve it. Thanks anyways!
No problem!
That’s a shame, most of the time it’s this easy but I guess this is a different problem. By the way, I had a similar issue recently, my Lutris was also from flatpak and the games inside stopped working. I switched to my distro’s native package and it’s working again. So it seems this is related to flatpak’s containerization, no idea what’s change with the recent updates though. No problem on Heroic.
I’ll have that in mind in case it happens in the future! Thanks a lot!
You’re welcome and good luck!
Thanks! I finally solved it!
That’s nice to hear! Also thanks for the edit with the solution.
Good job putting this together! Lots of useful info in your post.
My eye is locking onto this bit in the logs:
vkCreateDevice failed (VkResult: -7). Vulkan is failing to initialize, seemingly because of some missing extension.Try these for us and share your output, if you’d be so kind. Feel free to scrub any parts you don’t wanna share with a [REDACTED]. I’m mostly going off memory so some of them may fail and that’s okay:

Based on that output, I agree with the other comment that gamescope is your culprit. Try running this:
sudo cat /sys/module/nvidia_drm/parameters/modesetIt was in the last set, but I left off the sudo prefix on accident. If it outputs “N” or “0”, we’ve got an answer: gamescope needs KMS to run, but you’ve got an older GPU driver version (v550) and DRM (which KMS depends on) isn’t turned on by default until v560 per https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA#DRM_kernel_mode_setting.
So if that is the issue, this should sort you out as a fix and get gamescope running again. Be aware that it’ll reboot your PC in the process:
echo 'options nvidia-drm modeset=1' | sudo tee /etc/modprobe.d/nvidia-drm-modeset.conf sudo update-initramfs -u sudo rebootSeems like just Disco Elysium isn’t working. I did what you said and now the log is pretty different:

Disable gamescope in lutris settings
I was about to send a reply saying I already tried that and didn’t work. Guess what: it kinda worked haha. I tried opening Metro 2033 and worked (weird thing: My GPU and fans or whatever started go berserk. Didn’t stop until I activated VSync, smh). Now what I would need to solve would be being able to run locally preinstalled games (the one I have was installed via Bottles) and fix gamescope so I can use it without crashing. Thank you very much!
Most things can be installed via steam now as well. I stopped using lutris completely. You can go to install non steam game, find your game in your files and add it. Then go into the settings before you run it and force it to run with proton. Proton experimental seems to have covered most of my games but you can go a search and see what other people have had luck with.
Oh, didn’t think of that. Thanks!
I tried it and it worked! The only issue I’m having now is that it can’t read the savefiles and I don’t know how to fix that. I’ll keep updating.
What Linux OS? I saw there was an update to cachy that broke some GPU support but they fixed it later.
LMDE so debian with mint’s cinnamon desktop.
Yess
It’s Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 (LMDE 7)
Just to rule out the simple stuff - have you restarted your computer? Some drivers get kernel-specific versions, and if you ran updates recently then you may have the version built for the newer kernel but might still be running the old one. A restart would address this.
Yeah, I turned on and off several times the system since it started at least one week ago
I recently switched from proton-ge to proton-cachyos. When I did that it broke the configs, and had a similar issue. I wonder if an update is having the same symotoms of nullifying your wine-cfg.
Go into heroic edit a game’s configs and see if there’s an empty wine-cfg. Try pointing it to proton-experimental or whatever you were using before. It’s just a dropdown selector.
Didn’t work. Thank you anyways!
What about downloading a new game? Does that work?
What kind of game should I try to install? Windows based?
Yes. If a fresh install fails that’ll help debug it’s not a game config issue.
I installed Bioshock Remaster, which seems to be Windows. It opens with no problems.
Awesome! Maybe you should uninstall and re-install a game that wasn’t working. Make a copy of any saves first if you want to keep them. Likely something got borked in the update and didn’t convert the old installed games to the new config.
I’m gonna do that right now🫡
Do you know if you have installed those through flatpak or not? You can verify this by running
flatpak listin a terminal. It would be helpful if you shared the entire output of that command, particularly relevant parts would be about Nvidia drivers.I’m totally sure I didn’t. Installed metro via Lutris GOG installer and Dysco Elysium via Bottles and then “Add locally installed game” pointing to a .bat that starts it.
Install Lutris from flatpak. It’s sandboxed and updated there.
Yess, thats what I did
Sorry for confusion, I meant Lutris and Heroic, not the games.
No problem. Then, yeah, I installed them via Flatpak
