They actively hinder any effort to repair. You can’t get replacement parts if something small in the motor needs service, buy a new motor. There’s a drawing for it that lists relevant parts (line you know from other items or machines like dishwashers), which has a single item-number, which is “the motor”. Yes the whole thing. They are relatively good with warranty, and even if you’re (slightly) out of it. But once you’re out of whatever they decide is their grace period, even if the fix was trivial, you throw the whole thing away and buy a new one or more likely just a new e-bike.

Even worse is their design and handling of the batteries. Their circuits are essentially self-destructing. If you are able to replace cells in such a battery, your still incredibly likely to literally kill the BMS cause it’s designed to do this. If it loses power (voltage) even for a split second, it’s destroyed. Intentionally. Irrecoverably. You can’t get replacements, as we’ve covered already. So you throw the whole ass battery away cause it has a bad cell or 3 instead of just replacing those. What a waste. Not everyone can do this, but they actively hinder anyone that can, essentially booby trapping the devices. This includes making it near impossible for competent repair shops as well. They will not help anyone who wants to do this, even black list those from ordering parts that can be ordered.

Their devices are also often “coded” to each other, so unless you take them to an “authorized Bosch mechanic” and pay fees you can’t even swap parts that could be swapped. They just refuse to work and talk to each other. This is better or worse depending on model and/or generation.

Right to repair should be a literal right. Owning your stuff should be the norm. They are the antithesis.

Wow I wasn’t aware of this at all. I just got an e-bike with pinion mgu. I hope that the they are better in this regard in case I ever have problems.

They also leave it up to manufacturers to enable ‘optional’ features like the power more extender battery. And there’s often no compatibility list, you just have to hope everything works.

I’ve heard a lot of stories about people getting screwed on warranties, which is a big part of the reason I never bought one.

I have a gen 2 Performance motor on my bike. It’s really good. It can climb hills so steep that the bike will tip over backwards before it stalls out.
