Sure, there are valid reasons to go running in the gym. TubularTittyFrog also mentioned daylight and weather. But I see too many people running in my gym during sunny days and the gym is 100m away from a forrest on one side and 300m from a park on the other side. So why not go for a run outside and return to the studio for the next round of weight training.
There are also cardio options in the studio I do understand: Cross trainer and rowing machine for example. Not everyone has their own rowing boat. But running indoors right next to a perfectly fine outdoor opportunity I won’t understand. I don’t say it’s stupid, I just don’t get it.
