As I remember it (and I have a terrible memory), the fedi beans memes started pretty early on, like 2018, and came from a place of “we don’t get trending memes from other platforms so let’s start our own.” I think it came to lemmy from other fedi platforms pretty early on, and gets deployed periodically as a kind of palate cleanser. I blame the Brits, but I don’t have evidence to support that.
Yeah, it was “reddit has bacon and narwhals, we need our own thing!!”
Meaning it was completely inorganic and painfully lame. As a whole, Lemmy should all hold up a spork and call itself tEh PeNgUiN oF dOoM for being so quirky and random

I don’t think we are to blame for the beans thing (we prefer our beans as baked beans).
As a rule of thumb though, we can be blamed for far too much stuff. You need to include the french too however. They got up to almost as much “shenanigans”.

It’s a great source of protein, and cheap.
Especially if you buy them raw and cook yourself.
And they’re great if you personally wish to be a significant methane source
