The next episode of our monthly chat + feedback thread.

No matter what topic, if you want to talk about it then just write it in a comment :)

Last month was uneventful for me, so I don’t have a comment this time.

I am so glad to have swum into this new furry based Lemmy instance! It has been a nice change of speed for me…Since my recent awakening to an Anthrosona that I have not thought about for 43 years. Which is a Basking Shark, a rare thing in the community, I’ve noticed! On that front, I have been writing a bit to figure out the true nature of my Anthrosona (which is my account name, btw).

Anyway, some things have been happening for me: I am taking a Python Certification course so I can learn Python and actually write code (which won’t be rickety and flimsy). On the gaming front, I’ve been playing a mix of Vintage Story, some shooters like Metro 2033 Redux, replaying Cyberpunk 2077 (as a trans man V).

Another thing: In the wake of some bad tech news (more open source peeps are wanting to use or are using AI in the dev workflows). Instead of being sad, I just changed my whole email provider (from Tuta to Posteo). Kicked LibreOffice out of my productivity loop (using Apostrophe, a Markdown editor and Bibisco for writing), as my needs aren’t particularly complicated I am not noticing any holes in my current choices.

Tried to install Gentoo Linux on my current solo laptop, alas that failed, so I had to stick with Garuda Linux (Sway Edition, BTW). It’s still a pretty nice set-up but…I wish that I wasn’t so weirdly goofy when it comes to doing more complex installs. Perhaps one day, I will install a slightly more complicated Linux distro with an unslopped init system. ROFL Perhaps trying to install Chimera Linux is more my speed as it is far simpler than Gentoo and not slopped up! I would just have to learn to work with musl libc.

I also voted today, that was nice, and it makes me happy to do my part in making sure that things don’t become worse. Things have been mostly chill with the exception of some stressful feelings here and there, but nothing that I can work through!

Never heard of this type of shark before, but in the shark category I’ve seen quite a lot of people use a shark / hybrid shark fursona. But anyway, welcome to the community.

Good luck for your course, I hope you will like it. I didn’t know you could chose trans-man as a gender in Cyberpunk 2077.

I saw this trend happening, I don’t know what to think about it. Why did you choose to changed fril Tuta to Posteo ? I use ONLYOFFICE instead of LibreOffice, but otherwise I just type everything in markdown (I use Beaver Notes), even before posting long comments / post / message on anything.

I use to have Lubuntu before switching back to Winslop (for academic reason), in the mean tile I tried different distros (mostsly Arch based) and when I recently switched back to Linux, I started with CachyOS before breaking everything and now I use Bazzite (I can’t be trusted with too much power).

Oh nice, that’s a great job, especially considering that where I live only 40% of people actually vote. The main reason to why people don’t vote is because they don’t know who to vote for. Nice that things have been chill, it’s always a good time when nothing bad is happening.

Never heard of this type of shark before, but in the shark category I’ve seen quite a lot of people use a shark / hybrid shark fursona. But anyway, welcome to the community.

Basking Shark is rarely talked about, as they aren’t scary, they are gentle giants that only accidentally can hurt a diver. They tend to be very passive, dive deep, and breech the ocean’s surface like whales (for unknown reasons). A fascinating species as they are one of the few that are filter feeding sharks. Thank you for the warm welcome! I thought about being a hybrid, but found myself quickly realizing that I feel exclusively shorky (mostly a gentle giant).

Good luck for your course, I hope you will like it. I didn’t know you could chose trans-man as a gender in Cyberpunk 2077.

Well, it is more about emulating the trans man experience as he…Hasn’t had bottom surgery but top surgery that was the vibe that I was going for! You can choose mismatching gender expressions. But still be considered technically male or female.

I saw this trend happening, I don’t know what to think about it. Why did you choose to changed fril Tuta to Posteo ?

Tuta expressed an interest in AI and using it in the workflows, forgetting that programmers before them have used handwritten automation to automate boring repetition for other aspects of their project. They just want to use AI and I find that to be nasty AF. Posteo, because of their commitment to being Climate conscious, won’t ever have that heel turn. So I chose them instead.

I use to have Lubuntu before switching back to Winslop (for academic reason), in the mean tile I tried different distros (mostsly Arch based) and when I recently switched back to Linux, I started with CachyOS before breaking everything and now I use Bazzite (I can’t be trusted with too much power).

At the beginning of my journey, I learned to break stuff and fix it…So I can be trusted to use Garuda Linux Sway Edition, BTW (Arch-Based) it is less prone to breaking. Unlike CachyOS which is known (according to my Linux peeps I talk to regularly) to experience kernel panics and other weird issues. Bazzite is nice too, but they are liking the whiff of AI that they are getting. Which is a shame, I prefer to stay away from slopped distros. Right now, it’s a weird time for Linux. I hope we get through this rough patch.

Oh nice, that’s a great job, especially considering that where I live only 40% of people actually vote. The main reason to why people don’t vote is because they don’t know who to vote for. Nice that things have been chill, it’s always a good time when nothing bad is happening.

My small town/city is pretty chill so it isn’t often a target of tomfoolery…So the voting went smoothly, I happened to research everyone before going to vote because you can pull up sample ballots beforehand. I take my time and get informed…Because MAGA and GOP use uninformed voters as weapons. I do not want to be a weapon to be used. I will work against those types any day of the week.

That’s interesting facts about shark. I heard that most of them wouldn’t hurt humans unless they are threatening them.

Oh I see, yeah, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be a game with a lot of possibility as you can modify your body through the game.

I see, can be very annoying. Although, Infomaniak do have a commitment to climate and yet they still have their own AI chatbot.

There’s two different version of Bazzite from what I see, one of them have been vibecoded from the open-source code and the other, is, well, not vibe-coded apparently. That’s what I saw online.

I only take an interest in politic once I get the posters to convince you to vote for someone. Otherwise I don’t care about it at all and prefer to avoid it.

Well, there are a few that you’d have to be concerned about like tiger sharks, bull sharks, oceanic white tips, occasionally great whites (if you happen to look like their preferred prey). Generally sharks don’t attack people unless it is mistaken identity, one acts as prey, or you invade a shark’s personal space and don’t know to back off in time. Others will eat just about anything because food is scarce or in the case of tiger sharks…They will literally just eat anything because their teeth aren’t specialized for any particular prey. Humans are on the menu, if said human is not careful.

Oh I see, yeah, Cyberpunk 2077 seems to be a game with a lot of possibility as you can modify your body through the game.

One thing that I love about Cyberpunk 2077 is the flexible nature of the character creator, it’s powerful and cool. Has a lot of nice choices for how you shape your actual in-game character. Even though, you never see your character outside of certain situations as this is a first-person game.

I see, can be very annoying. Although, Infomaniak do have a commitment to climate and yet they still have their own AI chatbot.

There is a thing called Greenwashing and I feel that Infomaniak is engaging in that, wouldn’t surprise me as this is one of the many tactics that corpos use to peddle their filth. Posteo actually gives a shit by being committed to not using AI at all, and not allowing users to use so called AI Agents with their service!

There’s two different version of Bazzite from what I see, one of them have been vibecoded from the open-source code and the other, is, well, not vibe-coded apparently. That’s what I saw online.

That is news to me, as they were put on a watch list about being slopped and there being no alternative…So that means, that I might need to investigate it. However, I couldn’t really use an immutable distro anyway. As common container dependencies that make it easier to run software in mini-distros…are slopped. Things like Podman, Docker, are using Claude and other chatbot prompt slop to develop. Which wouldn’t ever be needed with projects of their nature. It’s just tragic that they get a whiff of AI and are addicted.

I only take an interest in politic once I get the posters to convince you to vote for someone. Otherwise I don’t care about it at all and prefer to avoid it.

As much as I would prefer to ignore politics, that will catch up with me and others that I would want to be protected if I am not careful. So, I tend to participate by engaging reasonably and avoiding overwhelming myself. The nature of politics is woven deeply into human culture…It’s not something that can be ignored, without consequences as politics informs a lot of worldviews, workplace practices, even open source projects. Look at the wildfire spread of slop within the open source scene.

Well, guess I still am a good snack 😅

Well, I don’t mind playing fpg with great character customisation, it’s like irl, you can customise yourself and yet not see it except in certain situation.

I don’t know if Infomaniak is doing greenwashing, I haven’t seen environment association complain about it. I reminds me of the search engine that plant a tree after a certain amount of search on their engine.

Well, even if Bazzite turns out to be slopped, I won’t really change it as it’s very plug-and-use and I had no issues (besides the recording issue), but it’s not just Bazzite apparently. But what I’d like is to see the implication of AI in the project, and how it’s used. We do need transparency on this end.

Yeah, I do agree with you, the issue is that no group satisfy me and you easily get insulted for participating in one. So I stay out of it.

Heh, we all are snacks situationally out in the wilds where we aren’t native! ROFL

Yeah, character customization is just lovely, the more robust the better in my opinion. As being able to express a hidden self in a video game is also a nice thing to be able to do. Or just be someone different than your normal self.

On the matter of Infomaniak: without doing proper research on the matter, it is a hedged guess on my part. All I know is there is no ethical use of AI as it is trained on stolen data, AI powers surveillance capitalism, and is actively being used in a movement to disenfranchise skilled laborers and creatives due to a profit motivation by the ultra rich.

On the Bazzite issue: That is your choice, I only mentioned it to get your opinion on the matter. As you know where I stand, I won’t repeat it.

Yeah, I don’t get insulted easily; but I do get annoyed when minority groups are attacked needlessly because they are being used as a target for pushing political agendas. I pay close attention to what is going on due to this, making sure people are getting needlessly pulled into the crossfire.

Yeah, I really like this part of gaming

From what I saw, Infomaniak use the heat generated by data centers to heat up buildings. Also, on the funny topic of profit motivation, there’s been a recent trend where people use generative AI to reverse engineer software that need subscription to make them open-source and available for free. But yeah, there’s also the darker part where people are getting replaced by it. I don’t like the fact that it’s used for surveillance and is trained on stolen data, but it’s not just capitalism that use it for surveillance (e.g : China).

For Bazzite, the confusion comes from multiple things : there independent projects and tools developed by community members that run on or integrate with Bazzite that are vibecoded, but the code for Bazzite have been reviewed multiple times. Its official GitHub repository shows approximately 8,400 commits, with a large number of contributors and pull requests, which would be very unusual if it was vibecoded. Bazzite uses established Linux component (based on Fedora Atomic) and its maintainers announced collaboration with the Open Gaming Collective in January 2026. Some tools created by the members of the community that are associated with Bazzite are indeed vibecoded, but it’s not the case for the distro.

If people were not trying to be unrespectful but would talk to each other in a peaceful way, we sure would get way more less issues.

Yeah, character customization makes me happy…Gets me immersed into a title.

I will have to look into Infomaniak myself, as I am still uncertain about them myself. A company can do good things to mask the not so great things going on in the background…I won’t make up my mind yet. Honestly, I just view the GenAI vibe-coding of software to be slop, the use of the hard work of others (often scraped from open source projects) to fuel a not healthy movement in open source. I will not be touching a single one of those tainted warez, a funny note is that the corpo made and peddled models are already coming out with restrictions to stop people from doing this. Because, that would mean corporations would be facing the consequences of their own actions, as they have abused their customers for years. It does give me the ick, but, this is a natural consequence of tech that was pushed to market way too fast without actually considering the ramifications of doing so. China and other countries are essentially doing a nasty surveillance and likely cyber-crime related stuff true, but with their own economic system powering it (despite them losing money on AI).

I feel very much like a Luddite in many respects about technology; I can’t see anything good about the current state of so called AI (really gassed up LLMs), it’s causing too much damage and that our political systems cannot fully restrain because politicians aren’t able to keep up with or are being bought by the technofascist elite. I think that I will never see anything positive about the tech, even if they do clean it up. As…The ability to exploit, manipulate, generate so much nastiness within a short span of time is disturbing.

Unfortunately, there are also a lot of projects that do indeed have some elements of vibe-coding/or LLM-assisted programming. The Linux Kernel itself is being tinkered with using LLMs, that spreads a taint to every distro by default (at least those who use the mainline kernel). Even systemd is being developed using LLMs, most distros incorporate that init system within them, so that also is another source of taint. Which is why I had been trying to install Gentoo, while they do use a slightly older kernel…Their default init system, OpenRC has a no AI commitment. I might try to find another distro that is at least a bit easier to install and without systemd so I can feel less awful about using Linux. Maybe, Chimera Linux (and eat the musl libc tax). The reason why I say taint, is because I worry about the code being generated, how it cannot be properly licensed and it will add technical debt over time. People might not be able to explain or understand that code in the future when LLMs will possibly be abandoned.

Not a good look to be honest, with Bazzite I found two instances of direct use of Copilot. Copilot Use One, ujust commit and Copilot Use Two, feat(portal). I could probably find more if I tried, but, they are clearly eager to use Copilot for things that a person can easily do. It would just be ‘boring’. This is the direct distro which is built using ublue-os (the foundation of Bluefin and Aurora immutable distros too as Bazzite is directly related to both of them), fundamental parts of Bazzite being affected by LLMs (often called AI). But again, I don’t use Bazzite, so no skin off my nose.

Yeah, I think kindness will go a long way towards making life easier. Just having low cortisol discussions. Like, I hope that I am not talking in a charged way in this case. I am sharing what occupies my mind on occasion. ROFL Ugh, it is a strange time to be alive.
