Let’s hope it’s not slopped!
Heroic works fine but I appreciate the gesture.
For me it’s definitely more about legitimacy, recognition and signalling to the market.
This. I don’t use GOG much, primarily because I’m lazy and just want all my games in the same place, but this is still fantastic news! It’s one less barrier to ditching Windows as the defacto gaming os. It’s also signaling to developers that the market share of users they cut off by explicitly excluding Linux (through kernel anti cheat or however else) is growing.
This isn’t news for us already on Linux so much as it is yet another signal to Windows users that gaming on Linux is viable and worth investigating.
GOG and CDPR are closely related, so if nothing else, this means a high likelihood of launch day support for The Witcher 4 on Linux (or at least Proton), and THAT is a big deal.
Do cloud saves work yet? They haven’t turned themselves on for me by default, so I’m guessing Heroic still considers the feature to be unreliable. That and proper achievement integration are my two most desired features for an official client.
Can’t wait, I’m hoping they release a flatpak at some point for all my immutable homies
yeah, I’m hoping so!
Finally! I would use GOG a lot more with an official linux client.
Just as long as I can still keep downloading standalone installers for both existing and future titles.
There are already a few games that REQUIRE galaxy to run, unfortunately.
See! I kept stating this! Nobody believed me.
To be fair, I’ve only seen it with the two more modern games I have on GOG and neither have multiplayer. All the actually old stuff doesn’t need Galaxy for squat. If you’re only using GOG for good old games, you may never have encountered it.
Which two? I buy modern games on GOG a lot these past two years.
EDIT: I think this might be a misunderstanding. If you go to your game library and try to download the game, “Download and Install Now” for GOG Galaxy is the first option, and the installer files may be collapsed by default. My understanding from looking through developer docs for GOG is that the DRM-free installer files are created for you automatically, so I don’t know how you would make a game require Galaxy.

No; when I try to launch the game from the .exe, it automatically opens Galaxy and only will run through Galaxy. If Galaxy isn’t installed, it gives an error saying it needs to be launched through Galaxy. It does this for both Mad Max and Saints Row 4; both were originally installed from the off-line installers downloaded from the website.
