I’m not sure this is exactly the case. I had a Latvian friend and the government would not pay for top surgery even though she was diagnosed by a therapist with a gender dysphoria condition. There were detailed conversations about traveling to another country to find a reputable and affordable arrangement.

But for typical cases, I think that is correct hah

You’re thinking of Latvia, which is a real eastern European country. The country in the comic, Latveria, is a fictional country in the Marvel universe ruled by Dr. Doom, who is apparently a very competent head of state.

I love Doom so much. He plays like he’s the bad guy but if you peel back the thinnest veneer of villainy, he’s literally just a good guy that wants the best for his people. He has ongoing beef with Fantastic but has showed up to help them fight off bigger threats on several occasions, mostly under the auspices of “this is MY mf planet and I WON’T have you wrecking the place”.

Doom is the platonic ideal of the Benevolent Dictator and while that would never fly in the real world for a multitude of reasons, it’s very fun to see in a comic book. Doom is what I imagine myself to be if given unchecked power (and is the reason I insist I’m not to be put in charge of anything ever).
