If you want a Christian state or an Islamic state (or a Jewish state, or really any kind of religious state) you’re going to want it to be liberal with secular values. If it’s not, then it’s going to have discontent, dissent and eventually be overthrown for violating the social contract.

You might think you belong to a popular religion, but in fact, you belong to a popular religious identity a group that is full of widely varying opinions about what passages of holy text are important and which ones should be disregarded. (🐪🧵💰) Everyone who you think is part of your congregation actually disagrees with you vehemently.

And when these issues receive air in a sectarian state – say when it’s time to base policy on religious values – the knives come out. A lot of knives. History of religion teems with so many knives.

After enough knives, some of us figured that maybe we should be allowed to agree to disagree. My liberty is more important than your disagreement with it, and your liberty is more important than my disagreement with it. Everyone should have rights. Even blacks. Even Jews. Even immigrants. Even trans folk. Even furries.

And yeah, some Muslims are fanatical and seem on the verge of violence. So are some Christians. So are some non-religious ideologues. White supremacy, for example, doesn’t really have any faith attached to it. Neither does capitalism.

Heck, keep dunking on the common folk, and even liberals will start gunning (or knifing) for universal civil rights.

i just started playing music at a Unitarian Universalist church and the open acknowledgement of this was one of my favorite things.

I almost think that’s the point honestly. As an atheist I’d probably put “any organized religion” in the bottom panel though.

I just see them as different denominations of Judaism, which is just a young social religion built off the stories, poems, and literature of older societies and cultures, which the Hebrews ironically loathed. Especially the Babylonians lol.

“Fuck those guys! We’re stealing Genesis, though… But later we’ll write about their demise with extreme exaggeration so it won’t even be believable, but it happened, trust us, fuckers!”

      “It happened.”

“Even the part about the woman lusting after lovers with donkey cocks who came like horses?”

“That actually was three different women who all made fun of my peepee. So triple yes.”

Hahaha! They always manage to cast shade on the previous followers. If you read the first part of the Quran you’ll find that the Jews are catching strays everywhere. The most sardonic harang i’ve ever read.

Totally lol did you know that to begin with, Mohammed would pray towards Jerusalem, in accordance with Jewish tradition? Then when it was clear the Jews weren’t buying his stories about being the new prophet and that he had some corrections for their religion, he got in a strop and “had a revelation” so that his followers now had to pray towards Mecca
