True story…

My wife (It’s her niece’s fourth birthday): Can you get her some classic children’s books. Just ask for a recomendation if you can’t find the familiar classics.

Me: I don’t trust their recomendations.

Shopping for children’s storytime books can be very enjoyable!

(Or frustrating, if the ones your store carries are bossy or preachy).

Pluck an assorted armful at random, sit on a tiny chair or beanbag and begin reading. Mostly silently, but if you find one that feels like it would sound good, you can read it aloud softly. Like a secret softly.

If you’re reading aloud and look up to see small faces, turn the book so they can see the pictures and keep reading softly.

If you find the book becoming too preachy, change the words for your audience but don’t buy the book.

If you’re silent but someone (small or big) looks over your shoulder, let them see.

You’ll find a few good ones, I’m sure. Now all you have to do is un-wedge yourself out of the tiny chair or scramble up off the floor…

Great advice. I picked a selection and asked a stranger in the store, a mom, if I could get her toddler’s help in deciding which to pick. This little kid took one quick glance and picked the Lorax and a Robert Munsch collection. I always trust the experts.
