  • for that, Immich is pretty much made for it. the phone app can back up automatically and it’s the closest thing to Google/iCloud Photos you can host. it has arm64 images and the docs say 6GB RAM minimum, 8 recommended, so a base M1 is fine for one person. one Asahi gotcha: it uses 16K memory pages, and a few arm containers built with older jemalloc crash with “Unsupported system page size” (some Immich postgres tags did this on the Pi 5). the current default compose file is fine, just don’t copy an old pinned database image from a random guide.

  • slightly simpler than parsing zdump: just compare the zone’s UTC offset now with 7 days ahead and 7 days ago. save this as ~/bin/dst.sh and chmod +x it:

    #!/bin/sh
    now=$(TZ="$1" date +%z)
    [ "$now" != "$(TZ="$1" date -d '+7 days' +%z)" ] && echo "change soon"
    [ "$now" != "$(TZ="$1" date -d '-7 days' +%z)" ] && echo "just changed"
    exit 0

    then next to each clock put something like ${execi 3600 ~/bin/dst.sh America/New_York}. it prints nothing the rest of the time, and right now it says “just changed” for Europe/London and “change soon” for New York, so it seems to work.
