Nice.
Did KDE not have this before?
you know what… I just tried it in Kubuntu 26.04 and it worked fine? lol so idk what this article is about
So I dug up the merge request and it seems to be about this unmerged Wayland protocol. I’ve only skimmed all this, but from what I can tell the difference is this protocol allows windows to declare themselves always on top, so you won’t need things like this in future.
I dunno if it was just me, but I’ve never been able to get the picture-in-picture windows fo always be on top.
Kwin window rule
How to get this working now
(As multiple people didnt know that this already works)
PiP works and the windows can stay on top, but they don’t by default, they need a kwin rule.
Search for that settings page in the menu and add a rule
- class unimportant
- window types all
- window title exactly "Picture-in-Picture
- force put window to foreground
The UI is weird because there is no clear distinction between conditions and actions, but it works, this one might be specific to Firefox based browsers though.
Anyone else having problems with PIP on Wayland? PIP windows simply refuse to stay on top for me (Pop!_OS 24.04)
Oh yeah, but you can add a window rule (which should be there by default but isnt)
It should filter by window title contains “Picture-in-Picture”
How is this different than just having multiple windows?
Easy and quick small borderless overlay I guess.
