Customer-service tools, technical or research systems, and certain internal corporate uses are exempt under Senate Bill S9051B.

Does technical systems mean API based inference providers are off the hook or not? Otherwise I guess it’s time to break out the jailbreak prompts for the Chipotle chatbot.

Might convince some people to try out a local AI that runs entirely on one of their systems instead and is thus inherently private and can be uncensored. That is, if they ever hear about this being a possibility.

I consider myself an AI skeptic, but if one wants to use AI for whatever purpose (mine is curiosity - I don’t use AI for anything other than experimentation), local AI is the way to go, in my opinion. You can run pretty impressive stuff on any halfway decent PC (I first started out with with hardware from 2017) - and if you have a powerful system (good CPU, 64 GB RAM, modern GPU with at least 12, better 16 GB of RAM), you can use a software like Strata to run AI models at impressive speeds that would normally require hardware that is out of reach for ordinary people.

I built my current system in early January 2025. I felt like prices were bleeding me dry back then (especially the GPU - I paid over 750€ for a slightly used 4070 Ti Super), but in retrospect, I lucked out with the timing, picked exactly the right moment for using the money I had saved up over a long period of time and am feeling extraordinarily privileged for having a really good machine right now. I recently needed a RAM upgrade anyway, which was extortionately expensive, but I felt like it’s now or never. The machine wasn’t built with AI as its main or even secondary purpose in mind - I only learned about Strata after the RAM upgrade.

That said, if you are using AI in e.g. a business context, Strata drastically lowers the barrier of entry for a serious local LLM. Two (more like three these days, I’d guess) grand isn’t a large expense for anything but the smallest business (compared to the substantial five digit sum you’d have to spend without it), although it should be stressed that you can’t really do many simultaneous sessions on a PC or server rack that just meets the minimum requirements for Strata - and it’ll eat up most system resources as it’s running, only leaving enough for very light other tasks, at least if you’re trying to run the version of Qwen that does the most with your system.

According to the headline, this is about chatgpt, I care about it and its users burning in hell, if that helps. They are not victims, and deserve no defense, it is a corrupt industry, owned by the worst people.

*Tomorrow it will be google and the day after that it will be facebook, instagram, and twitter, and the zombies who use those things will happily oblige.

The ID trash is already used in Australia to block under 16s from social media (although apparently it doesn’t stop most of them)

Surely this will only be used for AI website and no other kind of web site. It’s not like there’s some kind of wider campaign of age verification and deanonymization or anything

That’s explicitly what it’s for, though, it doesn’t require any other websites to have identification. They’d have to pass a new law to implement more ID requirements. This is just its own thing for chatbots.

I don’t see this as much different than the regulations China is implementing against AI companions.

This is a toehold, setting up and testing out the infrastructure. Some states and countries have been doing similar verification schemes with “adult” sites, which has been pretty widely unpopular. The goal here is just continuing to search for acceptable targets for this age verification bullshit.

China’s AI regulations, to my understanding, are an outright ban on “companion” features, rather than age-restricting them, which is much more sensible and justifiable.

They’re already setting up and testing out the infrastructure in many places, which you yourself have pointed out. It’s not like New York has to have some kind of special infrastructure that’s different from states and countries putting in ID laws to restrict access to “adult” websites. We are exiting the testing phase at this point, this is when we see wide rollout.

Also, age verification for adult websites is bad because they’re just going to ban minors from accessing important sexual health education information and track people who look up unapproved content. Oh you want to learn about your gender identity? Sorry kiddo, you aren’t allowed to learn about that. Oh you watch gay porn? Scan your ID so we can put you on a list.

Also also China’s AI regulations, to my understanding, restrict companion features in general while outright banning them for minors, which is done with information from the Internet real-name system.

Any further expansion of online age verification is bad, even when it targets annoying assholes nobody likes this time.

Does an internet real-name system not present all these same problems?

ai can get fucked, but everyone knows these types of things become precedents. The government is in a way using ai to manipulate the people, just as the ai companies use ai to manipulate trash people.
