If Laibach still had the boisterous balls of their youth, they would start a ‘Kill Palestinians’ tour and give concerts exclusively at venues that turned Macklemore down.

Nobody is trying to silence you Macklemore, throw all of the benefit concerts that you want all over the Earth.

But realize that the USA founded Israel, and a lot of Israelis are also Americans, and a lot of Americans are Israelis, and you’re not entitled to use US arenas.

There are thousands of venues in the USA that you can have concerts in, don’t act like you can’t have a benefit concert in the USA.

It’s actually not censorship when the Free Market decides you’re not viable. Imagine if it was the Chinese saying someone was too critical of their foreign policy to play. There would be a media blitz from The Guardian to The National Review. You realize how opportunistic this all is?

It’s really sad how only one of those arenas is actually named for something other than a sponsor. Madison Square Garden was named after Madison Square, which was named after James Madison, one of the US founding fathers. The original was on Madison avenue. That’s a solid name.

The rest of them… who knows where they are. These places change names all the time.

The ridiculously named “Climate Pledge Arena” is in Seattle. It used to be called KeyArena, because a bank named KeyBank bought the naming rights. Before that it was the “Seattle Center Coliseum”, before that it was “Washington State Coliseum”. It’s currently Amazon that owns the naming rights – you know, one of the many hyperscalers building AI datacenters like crazy. I don’t know which part of their climate pledge covers the building of datacenters, but it seems ballsy to make a pledge to destroy the climate and brag about it.

Honestly, these sound like a joke. Intuit Dome? Crypto.com Arena? Macklemore could have slipped a “ChatGPT Forum” or “Yuga Labs Arena” in there and nobody would have noticed. I certainly don’t know if the “Kia Forum” is real.

I’ve lived near Toronto my whole life, and SkyDome was such a great name for the stadium. The roof opens! SkyDome! Then a company bought it, and now it’s just “CompanyName Centre”. I’m still pissed about it.

Relatedly, there was also a venue called the Air Canada Centre, or ACC. That one was technically named after the airline, Air Canada, but when I was younger I hadn’t heard of the airline, and “Air Canada Centre” on its own sounded cool enough it just made sense. Like Air Jordans or Airwalk, it felt like we were putting Air on stuff, and this was in Canada, so Air Canada Centre. It wasn’t until they changed it to be named after some other company that I was like “why would they do that, the name was already… wait what the fuck…? It was always corporate?”

There’s an outdoor amphitheater that opened in the 80s outside of Boston that was originally called Great Woods, a pretty good name. Then it became [company name] Center for a few name changes (it’s currently xfinity, ugh). I’ve never heard anyone old enough to remember call it anything but Great Woods.

I think most people do this in general, even when the name was originally corporate to begin with. Tons of people still say Sears Tower, for example.

I have just gone from someone who would never go to a Macklemore concert to someone who will pay top dollar for Macklemore tickets. I don’t even know what genre this is. Kidsbop or something? Who cares? This guy has earned my deep respect.

We need more major artists to use their platform for good the way this man is doing. Macklemore is setting an example and deserves massive public support.

If he gets blacklisted by LiveNation (which is what this sounds like), and if other major artists decide to also follow suit, wrecking a monopoly could become a nice side-effect to helping stop a genocide.

The name is disgusting and malicious greenwashing.

For the company’s 2019 annual general meeting (AGM), 28 Amazon employees filed a shareholder proposal asking the company to create a climate change plan; over 7,500 Amazon workers signed a letter in support of the proposals. Shareholders voted it down. In advance of a September 2019 tech industry walkout to protest inaction towards climate change, over 1,500 Amazon employees called for the company to commit to achieve zero emissions by 2030, among other asks. The day before the walkout, Amazon made a climate pledge which included being carbon neutral by 2040.

“If it ain’t Orphan’s Own, don’t crush an orphan with it!”

And just look what the people have to say…

“For us, it’s always been orphan’s own or nothing, it takes longer, sure, but we’d rather just let those sad little fucker’s starve if we can’t crush them with the best machine”

Climate Pledge Arena is in Seattle, his hometown. But he knows the area and if he really wants to rile up some resistance do a word of mouth diy concert in Cal Anderson. Also the Climate Pledge Arena has their lights on 24/7 and this has nothing to do with anything but I want to know how much electricity they blow per year while sitting unused

Amazon shat out the whole bullshit “Climate Pledge” only after they illegally fired the employees, one of whom was Emily Cunningham, who spearheaded the internal movement to push the company to do better on climate.

“Climate Pledge” is a fucking lie. I’d rather the arena stayed named after a fucking bank since that’s at least less offensive and dishonest

Sounds like that needs to be voided due to the manager’s breach. It is not acceptable for a public property to be misused for bigotry and discrimination. Even if the contract doesn’t have some explicit clause addressing it, it can’t supersede the law and the City of Seattle cannot allow itself to be party to that behavior.

You really gotta! I nearly hit him with my truck in NE PDX a few years back —when he darted between two parked cars just after the intersection!

When I looked in my mirrors to see who the insanely lucky fucker was, I couldn’t believe I’d almost killed Macklemore! To his credit, he did look back to shout an apology and wave thanks, before running across campus.

        Still, though. Watch out! 😅😬

Climate pledge arena is the first net zero arena though. It offsets stuff by buying renewable energy credits from Seattle city light and also solar arrays and whatnot. But still, it could save about 5% more power by turning the lights off.

Who says you need an arena? Go for the American way. Offer a concert at a random dive bar that can only hold 30 people. Then just charge an obscene amount per ticket.

No. That wouldn’t affect these corporate arena fucks and would raise the market rate of bar shows in general and turn it into another empty scene of influencer attention grab. Keep billboard bands out of bars, there is a musical ecosystem that already exists there that they have no business overtaking. This would also be a fold as far as the actual issue involved goes, these arena owners need to be put on blast, you can’t fight that fight by taking your toys and going somewhere else where they can completely ignore you and keep doing as they do.

anyone who ever attends an event at any of these venues needs to be shamed. maybe punched and spit on.

anyone who owns any of these arenas is a rich asshole who’s probably funding a genocide in addition to keeping its victims from receiving aid. they need to be killed. their heirs need to have everything daddy gave them clawed back and given to the victims.

I’m the one being sarcastic. Not every bad thing in the world is capitalism. Besides, if you’re American you are under an oligarchy, not capitalism. If you’re in the EU or the like, congrats, you have capitalism with a mostly sane government and social safety nets.

Then the whole thing should have been alternating caps, not just the part where you were fake-quoting me. The American oligarchy is a direct result of unfettered capitalism, they’re anything but mutually exclusive. Idk what else to blame when their argument was “it won’t make enough money”.

Chase Center is local to me, and I can attest to the fact that they regularly allow shows there that are significantly less popular than Macklemore would be.

This decision was very clearly not based on ticket sales.
