Hitting someone with the expectation that they won’t hit you back is extremely cowardly. And should not be a social norm.

“Turn the other cheek” is generally attributed to Christian doctrine.

Manny people think it’s simply about nonviolence, but I like this alternative interpretation an old friend of mine had:

        • For the Pharisees, the left hand was considered unclean and it was taboo to use it.
        • The backhanded slap was always intended as an insult - given to someone who is considered inferior.
        • The foreslap (slapping with the palm of the hand) was reserved for equals.

So, if someone strikes your right cheek, then it must be a backhanded slap (i.e. an insult), because a Pharisee must use his right hand, to avoid the taboo. If, instead of slapping the person back, you present your left cheek, you force the attacker to break a taboo, acknowledge your equality, or simply stop hitting you. In one simple act, the balance of power is shifted.

When a woman hits a man she is taking advantage of the stigma against hitting women in some cases.

Yes its a thing that women hit men, women aren’t incapable of violence. Like men, women in most cases don’t “just go around hitting people” and a provoked to violence.

As for where I’ve seen it buses, main streets other places.

I’m obviously not trying to say women are incapable of violence but its a very different thing for violence to be encouraged or acceptable by peers than for individuals to act violently. For instance old social norms from the 50s in American made it acceptable to beat your wife.

Is it a newer thing? Is it more common in some countries than others? I’m in my 30s and I can’t recall this being a social norm when I grew up. I remember men being aggressive with other men sort of being accepted as inevitable but still frowned upon.

Lol. Yep. Equal rights are equal rights - this makes women as punchable as men.

Which doesn’t say much because we kinda shouldn’t punch people without reason anyway.

What about the equal right to not hit people?

Why does it have to be the right to harm instead?

Also, women dont have the right to hit men.

Out of the women I’ve dated, fully half of them were violent towards me. I’ve been slapped, punched, whatever you call the gesture of swinging your hand with a hammer, like banging on a door, scratched, bitten, kicked, had food spat in my face, I’ve been hit with blunt objects and had things thrown at me.

The most violent thing I’ve ever done to a woman was hold her down. I pinned her hands to the back of the couch to make her stop hitting me.

I’ve got no patience at all for any whining about how it’s not fair I’m strong enough to rearrange her face but she’s not strong enough to rearrange mine. I’ve been hit enough and if I’m hit again I’m hitting back.

If you swing on someone expect for them to swing back.

You hope that they’ll be reasonable and proportion the violence in return in equal measures to what you delivered.

Sometimes you hit the guy with PTSD he flips out in absolutely rocks. Your s*** though.

This is why you don’t hit people. You don’t know what they’re going to do. Humans are animals and sometimes they have issues.

Explain to a very angry drunk person that swinging on someone is a bad idea. Get back to me when that works.

Yes no fukin duh ideally no one would swing in the first place. Unfortunately not everyone is sober and of sound and ration mind. With no mental or behavioral issues that could impede their ability to make that call before they do something stupid.

I would love this to be a fairy tale wonderland where everyone gets alone and no one has cause or reason be it rational or irrational to harm another.

But we don’t. So we can only live be the hope that those of us who are rational don’t go over board, and those who arnt don’t get fucked over by one bad decision.

There was some sub on Reddit (not beatingwomen, but same vibe) that constantly had videos of women slapping or smacking a guy and then getting absolutely cold-cocked in retaliation and it was always so gross to me. Like damn dawg you were really just waiting for the opportunity.

It’s fine to not want people to smack or slap you, but proportional response exists and knocking someone out over a slap ain’t it. I can’t help but wonder how much violence that encourages to just have stuff like that dropped into the feeds of millions of people.

In my lifetime, most bigotries have been in decline. But misogyny is bad and getting worse. Those Reddit videos, as far as I can tell, are just feeding some desire that some dudes have to hit women. That shit didn’t come from a few posters, it didn’t even come from a few subs; but it made it to the frontpage almost every day.

Weak men are violent to women because they’re pitiful. The man who dreams of a woman to control has given up on the idea of a woman to love. And the idea that a woman could love him. When I was young, people like this were ashamed. Incel culture is like a pride parade for loosers and pussies.

There’s a book “Men who Hate Women”. I read it very cautiously, because even though I’m a feminist too many arguments seem to devolve into All Men=bad and this isn’t accurate or productive. It actually was a very well researched, well written book that is incredibly kind towards men and talks about how this culture harms boys and men and we as a society need to be aware of it and protect them before they get sucked into it. It talks about how the manosphere works and how the men leading the overall manosphere culture make millions of dollars telling boys and young men that women are evil and lesser creatures and deserve to be beaten and raped. It’s all about money; if a young man finds love and finds a woman he won’t need to keep going back to the manosphere, so he won’t be buying their courses, going to their boot camps, or interacting with their social media posts. It was written pre-Trump but it also lays a horrifying line that you can trace directly from incels to the rise of MAGA. Everyone should read it.

The Manosphere specifically gives advice meant to repel women, in order to keep men dependent on the manosphere. It’s why they unironically tell you to stop showering, so you can “win her over with your musk”

I’m more in the side of equal right equal fights. Man or woman if you assault someone expect to get hit back.

A normal dude slapping a construction worker is also likely to get laid out flat. Same logic between most men and women. Everyone is built different and if your goanna swing be prepared for the other person to not hold back.

But the rise of videos glorifying it is disgusting. It goes well beyond equality, reason or fair defense of self.

It’s just fucking glorifying violent for the sake of it most of the time. It’s awful.

And to be clear I’m not saying if someone slaps you, you break their nose or some shit. Reasonable response when possible and it almost always is.

But violence spirals fast and hard. And some people are genuinely a lot more jumpy then others. You never know what the other person’s idea of a proportional response is going to be till after you swing.

That first response is very rarely. One out of rational thought. And trying to judge that first response as if it did have rational thought in it is typically not fair.

Now if they keep swinging or something that’s clearly gone beyond that initial. Oh s*** swing response.

      Context matters.

People love to see a woman put in her place. If you watch courtroom footage videos you’ll see a similar pattern- like 50-75% of reccomended and highly watched videos are just “this woman sucks, watch her get put in her place”

And the other videos aren’t “man gets put in his place”, they’re other groups someone might have issues with or that might be high profile and significant- cops, lawyers, judges, landlords, tennants. Bonus points if you’re also a woman. But if you’re a woman it doesn’t matter what group you’re in, you can be cast as the villain.

By the law of large numbers, there will always be more examples of women as the villains, and even if videos casting men as villains get posted, theres a way in which the algorithm will surface those that validate peoples resentment towards women. And over time, that impacts what kinds of things get posted in the first place, because the ones where women get put in their place do well.

And theres a way the fact that its always women who are the villain in the eyes of the algorithmically warps your perception of people. If you scroll through that reddit feed for an hour it’d be unsurprising to walk away thinking women might be shithead instigators of violence, but it would be hard for that to more severely misrepresent violence women are involved in. Now imagine how being on reddit for years and years and just getting exposed to those innocuously on r/all effects you.

The algorithm picks what’s engaging to people, and people are DEEPLY engaged by seeing a woman put in her place. If you learn to recognize the pattern you can see how algorithms warp our understanding of the world offline

A large chunk of that is those TV shows purposefully pick women who make for good “villains”.

They do it to men as well. But throwing a woman up who is attempting to hide behind a double standard makes for “good” tv.

It’s just rage bait tv basically.

Not even necessarily a villain, just “good TV”. I remember a video, I think it was Lindsay Ellis, about “people make a scene getting arrested” videos, and noting that most of them seem to be of older, white, conservative American women, and supposing that they’re the ones making a scene because they’re the ones the cops harras the least, so when it happens it comes as a shock, and they flip out.

And there are millions videos of some guy taking a swing, missing, and getting knocked out. They’re very popular across a range of platforms. Worldstar ring a bell?

It is grossly disproportionate in many cases.

The point is almost everyone loves when an aggressor gets their comeuppance.

Add a culture of young women who believe they’re untouchable solely because they’re women, a mountain of entitlement and a severe miscalculation of relative strength and you get videos of women slapping guys who hit back like a truck.

    Equal rights equal fights

Edit: before people might take this out of context, what I mean is that self defense should be a human right that exists independently of gender. Don’t matter if you’re male female trans nonbinary or whatever the fuck, the right to not have your shit fucked with is universal.
