I hate my brain, it betrays me on a daily basis. If it was normal, my life would be so much better. So yes, yes, it is a separate entity from my essence! 🤣🤣

I am my own person, and my brain is just a passenger.

Psyche and Soma. Separate entities that work hand in hand but sometimes keep secrets from each other.

Sometimes my brain doesn’t take care of its flesh vehicle for a while; typical situation is I don’t get a shower or shave for a little too long. And then my brain becomes convinced that it doesn’t like itself very much. Then another part of my brain realizes what’s going on, but has learned that my brain isn’t very reliable, and is also fairly open to suggestion. So my brain takes a shower and shaves and puts on clean clothes, and then my brain is tricked into liking itself again.

It’s literally like playing peekaboo with your own self-esteem in the mirror.

Eh, wat. Is there any sane person who after a day of, say, real hard studying, cannot distinguish that “my brain and mind are tired from all the load they’ve pulled, but I am actually relieved it is finally over”?

I think I realised this the first time I heard someone talk about ego death or derealization as a result of a drug trip and I was like oh so like that feeling in between two rooms when you die and everything stops just before the new room’s program loads another you up?

Except, every time I talk about my brain as if it was a separate entity to other people they get annoyed at the implication that my actions aren’t simply my pure and magical free will.

I’m only autistic though not ADHD. At least as far as I know. And this tends comes from any person (though typically allistic in particular), not just neurotypical people.

          Well, yeah, no shit.

Maybe provide an example, because I’m picturing someone making a mistake and claiming it was “their brain that made them do it”. Which, ND or otherwise, is a lame ass excuse. If it actually was a direct consequence of being ND then I would at least expect the respect of discussing it in a mature way.

Trouble saying “socially constructive lies” instead of either uncomfortable silence or even just saying the uncouth thing out loud, avoiding talking over people and vocal volume control, hang ups relating to autistic perfectionism, obsessive behavior in general.

Like, these aren’t really things I can avoid doing. I know because I’ve tried. I mean, I can temporarily stop but that just usually leads to becoming incredibly burnt out, alienated, or depressed.

On a meta level, I don’t believe in free will anyway.

Yeah even anecdotally everyone I’ve ever got to know really well turned out to be just as fucked up as everyone else. But like some people do this kind of chemistry with their fucked-upedness where they hijack it to the benefit of themselves or others.

Your conscious brain is like 10% of your brain. The other 90% doesn’t follow instructions and needs to be carefully trained and complained about

Only people with ADHD have a cerebellum. For everyone else, it’s 100% prefrontal cortex. Crazy we even call it prefrontal, given that it’s how the entire brain functions, no exceptions.

Autistic experience is talking about your entire body this way. “The body is irritated” or “the body is overwhelmed”.

Especially when shutting down, thinking like that helps cope with the feeling of being “helplessly trapped”.

It’s the “self” part that’s the illusion there. There’s just consciousness and its content. There’s no “you” in there that’s somehow separate from the process in your brain causing it to feel like something to be.

Yep, this is why it’s possible to “reason” ourselves into any position over time, we just have to feel a certain way for long enough for rational justifications to seem plausible.

(Makes it damn hard to derive meaning from anything after a while)

And feelings/emotions are just mental shortcuts or high speed memory caches like in a cpu. They can be changed as well. Read “how emotions are made” by Lisa Barrett Feldman if you want to know more.

It really is. Haven’t you ever been trying to remember something, actively racking your brain to remember it, but it is completely lost. So you give up. You move on. Hours later, you’re talking to someone about dinner plans, driving in rush hour traffic, weighing the merits of Chinese vs Mexican, every part of your conscious mind handling the moment. And then suddenly your mind goes “DUSTIN HOFFMAN PLAYED CAPTAIN HOOK!”

That wasn’t “you”, the person, the conscious mind. That was a you that works backstage. They had to go down into the sub-basement to the deep stores, dig through a warehouse full of useless knowledge for the right factoid.

I call mine Derek. Derek just ran back up the stairs kicked in the door and delivered the query results after being dispatched hours ago. That wasn’t me that remembered that info. Derek did.

Had a parent (in full denial about a possible ADHD adjacent diagnosis) excuse their child’s actions (defiantly running away from their carer and across a road) as “their brain must have been tired”.

FFS you are your brain*, the rest is just transport.

    * I argue that your brain is just the substrate you run on and there can be several of you running there.
